What is Runner's Knee?

Runner's knee is the pain anywhere around the knee cap or patella. It is not something that only happens to runners. It is also known as patellofemoral pain syndrome. Running can  be one of the reasons of runner's knee but it can happen due to any repetitive stress around the knee joint. This condition is more common in females than males and overweight individuals are more prone due to obvious reasons. Activities like cycling, skiing, biking, jumping etc can cause the problem.
WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?
Pain due to runner's knee can develop due to excessive strain on the tendons, worn out cartilage and irritation in the soft tissues of the knee joint.
There can be multiple factors that contribute to the above mentioned problems and includes:
1. Overuse
2. Arthritis
3. Trauma or misalignment of patella or knee cap.
4. Having flat feet
5. Fractured knee cap and many more.
SYMPTOMS OF RUNNER'S KNEE
Classical symptom is dull and aching pain felt behind the patella that usually occurs while walking, standing, sitting for long hours, squatting, stair climbing etc.
Swelling can also be present due to irritation and inflammation of soft tissues.
Popping or grinding sound can be heard from the knee.
WHAT TO DO?
RICE protocol is usually followed for treating this problem. RICE stand for Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.
Rest should be given to remove any excessive stress on the knee joint to prevent worsening of the condition.
Ice is used to help pain and swelling.
Compression can be given using bandages to remove the swelling.
Elevate the leg up-to a certain height so that the excess fluid gets drained up from the knee joint reducing the swelling.
Apart from these methods, NSAIDs like ibuprofen, naproxen etc can be used to reduce pain and inflammation.
